All About Homegrown Family Doulas

The way you remember your birth matters. The way you are treated during pregnancy and birth matters. Your birth matters.
— Alanna & khristina
When we change birth, we change the world.

Our culture today assumes that birth is a medical event. Many are full of fear regarding birth and parenting. Fertility is considered a taboo topic, something to be ashamed of. The village we need is hard to create. Our culture makes holistic births and the idea of family-time an almost impossible dream. It is our mission to bring power back to the birthers as we serve Jacksonville, Springfield and the rest of Central Illinois.

Meet the doula duo.

A “homegrown” approach

Our care approach is similar to how we would approach our own family. Although we are trained professionals and educated with knowledge to do our jobs as maternal support providers, we come to our work with our hearts full with passion and a caring attitude. Every birth is different, but our approach stays the same.

Dedicated to evidence-based education

These are just a few of our favorites organizations we’ve personally trained with:

  • Khristina Helmich CD(DONA), HBCE, SpBPE

    DOULA + CLASSES + PHOTO/VIDEOGRAPHER

Khristina takes a holistic approach to birth and birth prep. She strives to advocate for families, while also educating them on how to advocate for themselves.

FAVORITE ITEM IN HER BIRTH BAG: I always bring a nightlight for the bathroom! Everyone forgets the bathroom, but it’s nice keeping the lights off in there.

ITEM YOU BRING FOR YOURSELF TO A BIRTH: Coffee

When she’s not at a birth, Khristina is home raising 3 little boys with her pilot husband and freelances as a graphic designer.

  • aLanna Baggett

    DOULA + LACTATION COUNSELOR

aLanna believes that education is key when it comes to birth prep and birth. Her goal is to provide you with applicable information to help you make the best decisions for your family.

FAVORITE ITEM IN HER BIRTH BAG: I always have my bluetooth speaker. Music can be such a powerful tool before, during, and after birth.

ITEM YOU BRING FOR YOURSELF TO A BIRTH: A cardigan

When she’s not at a birth, aLanna is either at school where she teaches 7th grade or at home with her two boys and her husband – probably playing outside. #boymom

  • She is truly a rockstar doula. She coached me through hard contractions and helped me to relax and get rest in between. I really don’t think I could have managed my long unmedicated home birth without her by my side. I would recommend her doula services and her Hypnobirthing class to any woman.

Kendell W., HypnoBirthing Class & Doula Client

  • We took Spinning Babies. Khristina is absolutely amazing! She is fun, easy going, and so knowledgeable. She explains things so you understand, listens to any and all concern or comments you have, and practices with you (and involves your partner). I already feel relief physically just from practicing the postures and I feel so much more confident in preparing my body for labor and techniques my partner and I can use during labor.

    - Kristen S., Spinning Babies® Parent Class & HypnoBirthing Class

  • When a complication came up after my labor, Khristina helped locate donated breast milk so that my little one was able to eat while we were separated. Once we got home, she came over during the post-partum period to help out and just chat. Khristina was literally a life saver and was the best birth support anyone could ask for...

    - Danielle S., HypnoBirthing Class & Doula Client

  • She came back to visit twice after the birth for postpartum visits - she brought my husband and I food, washed our dishes, did a load of laundry, folded clothes, and just hung out with us. I would highly recommend her services to any expecting mama!
